If you want to travel by Rail:
Riding the Rails to Pasadena
Despite the common misconception that you can't travel anywhere in the Los Angeles area without a car, and that the only way to possibly go between
cities is by airliner, it is possible to get to the convention by train and light rail without driving or flying from many places.
This article gives general guidance on taking a train trip to Pasadena. Of course, consult the various travel providers,
including Amtrak (
Amtrak.com.), for specific schedule and fare information.
All Railroads Lead to Union Station
Intercity trains (Amtrak) and commuter trains (Metrolink) all take you to Los Angeles Union Station. (Amtrak station code LAX).
From there, take the light rail (
Metro Gold Line) to Del Mar station and walk approximately
0.6 miles (about 1 km), walking east on Del Mar Blvd and turning left on South Los Robles Ave toward the Pasadena Hilton.
(See
Walking Map for a walking map between light rail and the hotel.) Or call the Hilton at (626) 577-1000 and ask them to come pick you up!
They will do so if the van is available.
Light rail runs from about 4 AM - Midnight, with the last weekday light rail trip leaving Union Station at 11:54 PM.
Intercity Trains (Amtrak)
From the North
Amtrak California's Pacific Surfliner trains (
CA Pacific Surfliner)) run north of Los Angeles as far as
San Luis Obispo. From north of SLO, including the Bay Area, the only all-rail option is the Coast Starlight, (
Coast Starlight)
which runs daily between Seattle and Los Angeles via Sacramento, the Bay Area, and the California coast, with a scheduled arrival at
9 PM at LA Union Station.
From the Bay area and California's Central Valley, a usually cheaper and faster option is the San Joaquin service (
San Joaquin Service)
between Oakland and Bakersfield, but this includes a 2 ½-hour connecting bus ride between Bakersfield and Los Angeles.
There is also a bus-rail option from San Jose that involves an approximately 4-hour bus ride to San Luis Obisbo, where you catch a
Pacific Surfliner to Los Angeles.
The Metrolink commuter train service (see below) runs from as far north as Lancaster and Palmdale.
From the South
CA Pacific Surfliner trains run at least twelve trains daily between San Diego
and Los Angeles, with some continuing north to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
Metrolink service
runs from as far south as Oceanside.
From the East
Amtrak's Southwest Chief runs daily between Chicago and Los Angeles via Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff.
Amtrak's Sunset Limited) runs three days a week each way between New Orleans and Los Angeles via Houston, San Antonio,
El Paso, and Tuscon. The nearest station to Phoenix is at Maricopa. Additional Amtrak routings from Phoenix to Los Angeles include a 2 ½-hour
bus ride to Flagstaff to connect to the Southwest Chief.
The Metrolink commuter train service (see below) runs from as far east as Riverside and San Berndardino.
From the West
Have a nice swim! Seriously, Metrolink commuter train service (see below) runs from as far west as Oxnard.
Commuter Trains (Metrolink) and Light Rail
Metrolink Trains commuter rail system serves the greater Los Angeles Area, from Union Station.
Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit
LA Metropolitan Transit Red and Purple (subway) lines connect with the Gold Line (light rail) at Union Station.
